The Remo Kanjira Drum is the contemporary version of the traditional India Kanjira, which was made using the skin of the now endangered monitor lizard. Remo's Skyndeep graphic lizard drumhead is an ecological tribute to the beauty of the monitor lizard. Remo's Kanjira is constructed with a tunable, synthetic, Skyndeep graphic drumhead that is attached onto the Acousticon drum shell with a 30 radius bearing edge. The Kanjira is finished with a dark stain Veneer giving it an elegant and traditional antique look.
With Remo modern technologies, using these proprietary materials enables a player to bend, and modulate the pitch exactly like the original, without being affected by climate changes.
You can easily tune Remo's Kanjira with a 5/64" hex key by inserting it into the recessed key hole and tuning key in small increments, achieving the desired low pitch. The 2-3/8"wide x 7" diameter Kanjira fits comfortably in the player's hand and features a 1" flat jingle set that produces a dry tone with short decay.
The Kanjira is part of the rich and complex Indian classical drumming legacy. The South Indian frame drum is an instrument used in the classical Carnatic music. The original kanjira was made from the jackfruit tree using the now endangered lizard species Bengal Monitor or, Varanus Bengalensis of India.
This drum was naturally pre-tuned very high and in order to get a good bass sound the performer sprinkled water on the inside of the drum which loosened the tension. This tedious process would be repeated many times during a performance. The tone of the drum is also affected by the climate and required performers to carry a few kankira drums assuring at least one drum was perfectly tuned.
Remo has developed a modern Kanjira using their proprietary Acousticon drum shells made from 100% recycled wood fibers. The Remo Kanjira features a replaceable drumhead and is easily tuned with a drum key. With Remo's drumhead technologies you can be sure to see future creations for the Kanjira drum.
